Natasha Asghar becomes first woman of colour elected to Welsh parliament

Popular South Asian TV presenter Natasha Asghar has become the first woman of colour in history to enter the Welsh Parliament as the Regional Member for South East Wales.

Natasha is the daughter of Mohammad Asghar (Member of Parliament) for the region of South East Wales which represents over 400,000 people. He was a member for thirteen years before his sudden passing last year and was significantly the first ethnic minority member to enter the Welsh Assembly in 2007. His daughter Natasha has now won a seat only her Father was able to secure successfully.

Speaking about her victory Natasha said in her acceptance speech, “A few months ago we rejoiced when we all saw the first woman of colour enter the White House and today I am honoured that each person who went to the polling stations, those who did a postal vote and supported the Conservatives have made history today.

It’s because of you, that I will be the first woman of colour to make her way into the Senedd and I am eternally grateful to each and every single person who helped me make a dream come true.”

Speaking about her plans now, Natasha added, “We have all seen the Covid pandemic wreak havoc on so many people’s lives and I plan to work hard to create a recovery plan for the residents of South East Wales, revive all aspects of their lives from health to education, with a focus on economic recovery for the betterment of every single person in my region regardless, if they voted for me or not.

When asked about her success Natasha said ‘when my Dad passed away I was worried how I would fill the void of a man who loved and who lived for elections. But thanks to the unwavering support of my Mum, my family, friends, Members of Parliament (London), past/present Members of The Senedd, the passionate and hardworking candidates across the region, party volunteers, those in central Office as well as my supporters I felt that void was a lot less and I owe my success to all of them.”

Over the years, Asghar has been a prominent name in the media circuit with assignments with the likes of QVC, ZEE TV, Buzz Asia and Lyca Radio.

Asghar took her oath on 8th May 2021.
