Mother’s Day: 5 actresses who played mother to Big B

Over the years Amitabh Bachchan has worked with some extremely talented actresses. Some gained fame by being paired opposite him while others gained popularity by becoming his onscreen mother.

BizAsia will be looking at five actresses who during their career played the role of Big B�۪s mother.

Waheeda Rehman

Rehman has worked with Bachchan in numerous films from ��Kabhie Kabhie�۪ (1976) to ��Adalat�۪ (1976). It is Rehman�۪s versatility that she is able to pull off any role given to her be it Bachchan�۪s wife or the role of his mother. ��Namak Halal�۪ (1982), ��Coolie�۪ (1983) and ��Trishul�۪ (1978) are some films where she played mother to Bachchan.

Nirupa Roy

Roy was known for portraying the role of an Indian mother, who followed her traditions and believed in good. She played the role of Bachchan�۪s mother in a number of films especially in the 1970�۪s

In fact it would be strange to see another actress play his mother instead of her. Most of the situations in the film consisted of mother and son being separated by circumstances to be reunited one day. ��Mard�۪ (1985) and ��Amar Akbar Anthony�۪ (1977) are examples of this as in both films Roy loses her children when they are young and only when they have grown into adults she is united with them.

Zohra Sehgal

Although Sehgal played the role of Bachchan�۪s mother in one film ��Cheeni Kum�۪ (2007), it was worth mentioning because she did such a wonderful role. The mother and son relationship between the two actors was memorable due to the comedic situations that took place. Sehgal is constantly on her son�۪s case whenever he comes back from his restaurant. She insists that he should take more care of himself as he�۪s getting older and the best way to do this is to join the gym.

There are lots of hilarious scenes between the mother and son. When the son asks his mother if she has eaten yet, she replies that she has and she can�۪t wait around for him. He sarcastically replies that�۪s good if you�۪ve eaten the food and you�۪re still alive it must be okay for me to eat.

Vidya Balan

Balan did something that wowed audiences and probably even amazes her till date. At such a young age and so early on in her career she played the mother of Bachchan which many actresses would think twice about doing.

The character of Balan was of a strong, unmarried mother who brings up her son without a man. She never let society or tradition get in the way of motherhood. She stood up to the world by completing her studies and eventually becoming a gynaecologist while bringing up her child.

Balan did an exceptional role for which she received the best actress award.

Rohini Hattangadi

This actress has played mother to many actors in the industry from Shatrunghan Sinha, Anil Kapoor even Mr Bachchan. The most memorable film was ��Agneepath�۪ (1990) in which she always teaches her children about following the right path. Vijay Chauhan (Bachchan) of course doesn�۪t believe this after the tough upbringing he has had. All he wishes is that his mother will love him and tell him that he isn�۪t a bad person.

Her character was of a mother who loved her son but didn�۪t display it. When he gets hurt she wants to see him but when he is nearby she doesn�۪t show how much she cares for him. It�۪s more of a tough love relationship she has with him.
