Liz Truss will become UK’s next prime minister after beating Rishi Sunak

Liz Truss has beaten Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest and will become the UK’s next prime minister.

Truss will takeover from Boris Johnson on Tuesday and become the nation’s third female leader.

Truss said it is an “honour to be elected” as she thanked her party for organising “one of the longest job interviews in history”.

Liz Truss beat Rishi Sunak

Boris Johnson was forced to announce his resignation in July after a wave of ministers left his government over a series of controversies. He will visit the Queen at Balmoral Castle in Scotland to formally tender his resignation. Liz Truss will also meet the Queen, who will invite her to form a government.

Liz Truss secured 81,326 votes to Rishi Sunak’s 60,399 in the Conservative Party leadership contest.
