JioStar, ZEE & other broadcasters surrender TV licences as viewers switch to digital
India’s broadcasting landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, with around 50 television channels surrendering their licences over the past three years as viewers increasingly migrate to digital platforms.
Major networks including JioStar, ZEE Entertainment Enterprises, Eenadu Television, TV Today Network, NDTV and ABP Network are among those that have relinquished their traditional TV licences, reflecting a strategic pivot towards digital‑first content as linear television continues to lose ground, according to data from Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
One of the most significant developments comes from Culver Max Entertainment (formerly Sony Pictures Networks India), which has surrendered 26 downlinking permissions after restructuring its operations to streamline uplinking and downlinking for the same set of channels.
