ITVX picks up rights for ‘Sholay’ as tribute to Dharmendra
In an unexpected but warmly welcomed acquisition, ITVX has picked up streaming rights to the Bollywood cult classic ‘Sholay’, marking one of the rare occasions a major UK platform has added a vintage Hindi blockbuster to its catalogue. The move comes as a heartfelt tribute to the late Dharmendra, whose passing prompted renewed global interest in his most iconic works.
Released in 1975 and directed by Ramesh Sippy, ‘Sholay’ is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in Indian cinema history. Blending western-inspired action, drama, and unforgettable dialogue with a timeless story of friendship and revenge, the film stars Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan in his legendary role as Gabbar Singh. Its characters, music and scenes have become ingrained in India’s pop-culture fabric, with generations continuing to quote its lines and celebrate its influence.
The film’s television rights are held by JioStar, and ‘Sholay’ has long remained a staple of Indian broadcasting, with regular airings on Star Gold and Colors Cineplex. That makes ITVX’s acquisition particularly noteworthy, as the film seldom appears on international streaming platforms outside of India due to complex licensing arrangements and its enduring commercial value.
