India pauses news channel TRPs as government raises concerns over Israel-Iran reporting
India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has directed the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to suspend the publication of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for news television channels for a period of four weeks.
The ministry has instructed BARC to immediately halt the release of ratings data for the news genre, with the suspension set to remain in place for four weeks or until further notice.
The decision follows concerns within the government over the nature of coverage by some broadcasters relating to the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict. Officials said certain programmes had carried speculative or sensational material, which could potentially cause unnecessary alarm among viewers, particularly those with family or personal connections in the region.

According to the ministry, the temporary suspension has been introduced in the public interest and is intended to encourage responsible reporting during a sensitive international situation.
BARC is responsible for measuring television viewership across India and releases weekly ratings that are widely used by broadcasters and advertisers to assess channel performance. The pause will temporarily halt the regular ratings cycle for news channels while the government continues to monitor coverage of developments in the Middle East.
