‘Homebound’ misses out on Oscar nomination, Karan Johar says he’s “proud”

‘Homebound’, India’s official entry for the 2026 Oscars, did not make the final five nominations in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category, despite being shortlisted among the top 15 in December.

The film, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, had generated significant buzz after its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and positive reception at several international festivals.

The nominees in the category are ‘The Secret Agent’ (Brazil), ‘It Was Just An Accident’ (France), ‘Sentimental Value’ (Norway), ‘Sirat’ (Spain), and ‘The Voice Of Hind Rajab’ (Tunisia).

Reacting to the news, producer Karan Johar expressed pride in the film’s journey. In an Instagram Story, he wrote: “Proud! Love you @neerajghaywan for allowing us to bask in your light!” Ghaywan responded, thanking Johar for his support and calling him “an absolute rock.”

‘Homebound’ tells the story of childhood friends Shoaib and Chandan, whose shared dream of joining the police force is disrupted by the COVID-19 lockdown. The film is inspired by journalist Basharat Peer’s article Taking Amrit Home: A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway. It is produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra, with Martin Scorsese among the executive producers.
