Disney Star to broadcast 12 IPL 2023 matches free-to-air in India

Disney Star has announced that it will broadcast 12 IPL 2023 matches for free on its service, Star Utsav Movies.
This is the first time that Disney Star will be broadcasting IPL matches free-to-air since it acquired the rights five years ago.
Exchange4Media reports that the move will boost Star Utsav Movies’ viewership in rural areas.

Some will see the move as a reaction to rival digital platform, Jio app, streaming the entire tournament free for online users.
This year, Star Sports won the television rights, while Viacom18’s VOOT acquired the digital rights to broadcast the IPL. In the UK, DAZN and ITV4 will share broadcast of the matches.
