Star Jalsha to replace ABP News in UK
Star Jalsha to replace ABP News in UK

As BizAsia exclusively reported earlier this week, Star TV UK will replace ABP News with Bengali entertainment channel, Star Jalsha, here are the full details.

Launched in September 2008 and rebranded in June 2012, Star Jalsha dominates the Bengali television ratings in India as the number one Bengali General Entertainment channel. With the launch of Star Jalsha in the UK the Star Network expands its regional offering to the UK۪s Bengali community from both India and Bangladesh.

The channel will be available as part of Sky’s Entertainment pack replacing ABP News on Sky Digital. ABP News, which no longer is a Star TV channel, will exit the UK market. Star Jalsha will take EPG 808 from Thursday 22nd November. On Virgin Media, ABP News will be replaced with Star Life Ok.

When BizAsia contacted Star TV UK on why it chose Star Jalsha to replace ABP News over other Star TV channels like Channel V and Movies Ok, it said, “We will look at Channel V in the future . With regards to Movies Ok, there are already a lot of Hindi language Bollywood movie channels in the UK, including our own network Bollywood channel Star Gold.”

BizAsia also asked Star TV UK how it plans to compete with the large amount of free Bengali channels that are already available in the UK, “The free Bengali channels in the UK largely cater to just the Bangladeshi community. Star Jalsha is the only quality Indian Bengali channel that offers premium family entertainment content with an appeal to both the Indian and Bangladeshi Bengali speaking community in the UK.

Yeshpal Sharma, Sr. Vice President UK & Europe says, I share Kevin۪s enthusiasm and am pleased to be part of history making Star Jalsha the first regional South Asian channel to be available on the Sky Entertainment Pack. We are very excited to bring Star Jalsha to our UK viewers and as always, our commitment to quality broadcasting will be our utmost priority.۝
