Box Office: ‘Ek Villain’ & ‘Punjab 1984’ boast impressive start

The sole Bollywood release today is Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor and Ritiesh Deshmukh starrer Ek Villain۪. It has started off well at the domestic box office but, in some areas, has been outdone by Punjab 1984۪, a Punjabi film starring Diljit Dosanjh.

Ek Villain۪ was expected to open well but it has also been strong in tough areas such as Kolkata, according to Box Office India. The film has had heavy promotions in the last few weeks and initial trailer have only proved how much the audience was waiting for its release. This topped with the soundtrack۪s popularity and the Aashiqui 2۪ team coming together have helped drum up interest which is no doubt translating at the ticket windows.

Punjab 1984۪, which saw a premiere in Birmingham, UK, last night, has held its own in Punjab, as predicted, and in some places has doubled the collections of Ek Villain۪. It is also doing well in Delhi.

Humshakals۪, in its first week, had made just over 50 crores nett. Whilst this is steady for the Sajid Khan directorial, no doubt this week۪s releases will make a dent in collections from this weekend onwards.
