It is the fastest that a film has reached 100 crores in the history of the domestic box office and it is ‘Chennai Express’ that is continuing to break records continually. The previous record was held by Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012) for crossing the mark within five days in India-only collections. BizAsia reported earlier in the week that ‘Chennai Express’ had broken the record that ‘3 Idiots’ (2009) had held for a preview day.

‘Chennai Express’ is proving a real winner at the box office overseas too and figures are proving to shatter the records set in both the UK and the US for any Bollywood film. UTV Motion Pictures have said that ‘Chennai Express’ is seeing the widest release ever for a previous Bollywood film in the overseas market and it seems this is causing them to laugh all the way to the bank. The overall figures from the preview day on Thursday to Sunday suggests that a cumulative figure may well mean that the film has crossed the 150 crores mark worldwide.

Talking about the film’s distribution within the sub-continent,Gaurav Verma, director of India theatrical distribution, Studios, Disney TV, told Variety, “Though Chennai Express۪ is playing in the highest number of screens for any film, we still ran out of capacity in most locations due to this huge demand at the box office and the film is on its way to create new benchmarks”.

Amrita Pandey, executive director, international distribution, studios, at Disney UTV, stated, “۪Chennai Express۪ is setting new opening day and paid preview records and benchmarks in most countries. In many cinema chains we۪ve added shows and the movie was moved to additional screens and to highest capacity screens”.

Currently, the film has made 100.67 crores nett at the domestic box office and overseas collections are just under 45 crores. Keep checking BizAsia for more.
