Alia Bhatt is one actress in Bollywood who has truly made a name of her own in the film industry. Despite coming from a film family being the daughter of filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and half sister of actress Pooja Bhatt, she has proved herself to be a versatile and fresh heroine. Whether Bhatt is playing the spoilt schoolgirl Shanaya in Student of the Year۪ (2012) to playing the kidnapped girl with Stockholm syndrome as Veera in Highway۪ (2014), Bhatt has proven that whatever role she takes on, she can give it justice. So much so that she isn۪t afraid to take on new challenging roles and make them her own. As Bhatt celebrates her 23rd birthday on 15th March, BizAsia looks back at Bhatt۪s dance numbers, which have had the audience۪s dancing in their seats.
Radha in Student of the Year۪ (2012)
Bhatt plays label loving and pampered Shanaya in Student of the Year۪ and even though it was her debut film, she dazzled on screen. Wearing a desi pink and silver glittering lengha, Bhatt looked beautiful in this song and really took upon herself to bring the song to life. So much so that towards the end of the song, there is a tribute to Dafliwale Dafli Baja from 1979 hit Sargam۪. Bhatt took on the traditional steps with ease and emulated the spirit of the song well.
Iski Uski in 2 States۪ (2014)
Based on a novel by the same name by author Chetan Bhagat, 2 States۪ is a romantic comedy telling the story of Punjabi boy Krish Malhotra (Arjun Kapoor) and Tamil Brahmin Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) and the struggles they face getting married, coming from different cultural backgrounds. Iski Uski marks a turning point in the film where Ananya finally is accepted into the family. Though the song is pictured on Kapoor, Bhatt has a traditional segment in the song where she shows off her traditional Bharat Natyam dancing skills. It was very elegantly done and gave the song a very different flavour.
Saturday Saturday in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania۪ (2014)
Humpy Sharma Ki Dulhania۪ is a fun and youthful film starring Bhatt and Varun Dhawan as Kavya and Humpty. Bhatt played a feisty girl from Ambala who goes to Delhi for her wedding shopping to attain her holy grail, a lengha by Manish Malhotra. In Delhi, she meets Humpty who is a carefree Delhi boy who doesn۪t have much going for him and they start their journey together. It is a fresh young film set in India and though Saturday Saturday۪ was not a part of the film, it is still remembered by many. It is a peppy dance track and Bhatt does a great job playing hard to get in a club like atmosphere.
Gulaabo in Shaandaar۪ (2015)
Bhatt plays orphan Alia Arora in this film, who is adopted by a business driven family and is loved dearly by her adopted father Bipin Arora (Pankaj Kapur), much to the dismay of her grandmother. When the family descends upon on a palatial wedding venue for daughter Isha (Sanah Kapoor) wedding, Alia meets event manager Jagjinder (Shahid Kapoor) and develops an unusual connection to him based on both their eccentricities. Gulaabo is a great song, being sung to Isha to cheer her up and both Shahid Kapoor and Bhatt are dressed as men in suits. The dance and the mood of the song is very flirty and risqu̩ and Bhatt looks fantastic in this song, bringing the moves to life.
Kar Gayi Chull in Kapoor & Sons۪ (2016)
Though Kapoor & Sons۪ is yet to release, Kar Gayi Chull is already becoming a firm favourite with fans, purely through the promos. Not much is known about the film but the song is picturised on Sidharth Malhotra and Bhatt. As the song is set in house party, the moves are very much freestyle but again exhibits, the same fresh preppy vibe that Bhatt emulates so well. This is definitely a film to look out for and will be released on 18th March.
BizAsia has enjoyed looking back at Bhatt۪s dance numbers and wish her a very happy 23rd birthday.
