BBC Asian Network’s Sonnyji on Brit Asia TV

BBC Asian Network presenter, Sonnyji will be making his television debut with a weekly show on Brit Asia TV.

‘The Mash Up’ is a six part series, which will Sonnyji talk personalities from the Bhangra and Asian alternative music scene. He will travel across the UK to the biggest electronic club nights. This rare insight into UK club land has never before been seen on British Asian TV, the channel has claimed.

Says Sonnyji, “I’ve got strong Desi roots and grew up being not only into Bhangra, but Electronica too. The point of ‘The Mash Up’ is to show the UK British Asian audience a glimpse into the Dance & Electronica scenes. For a long time the general view has been that if Asians are not listening to Bhangra or Bollywood then it will be R&B or anything urban.”

The Bandish Projekt, Imran Khan, Swami and The Dark MC are just a few of the stars that will feature in the show.

Sonnyji is no newcomer to the British Asian music scene. As resident DJ at Asian underground night Shanti from 1999-2005 he created a form of DJ style coined as ‘Bhangra House’, pioneering dance melodies mixed over Bhangra and Asian beats.

In June 2007, he joined the BBC Asian Network to host and DJ on his own Saturday night mix show, ‘The Bhangra Mixtape’.

Brit Asia TV is known for using presenters from the BBC Asian Network to host its shows. Recently Jas Rao, Noreen, Sukhi Bart, amongst others have been a part of the channel.

‘The Mash Up’ airs every Wednesday at 21:30, starting 24th February.
