Anushka Sharma on getting Gujarati-Hindu accent right

Set to enthrall audiences yet again in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, Anushka Sharma will be seen playing a Gujarati girl. Though from the trailers it seems easy, the actress has expressed that she had to prepare a great deal to get the Gujarati-Hindi accent right.

“After staying in Mumbai for so long, I can relate to the Marathi-accented Hindi, but I had no reference for the Gujarati-laden Hindi. I wanted to ensure that I don’t get it wrong even in a single line,” Times of India reports Sharma explaining.

She went on to add, “So, I started writing the dialogue the way they would sound phonetically. For instance, Harry became Hairy. I even made my diction coach record the dialogue and I heard it over and over again.”

“My role is not just about the looks, it’s also about sounding correct,” Sharma went on to express.

When challenged in the fact that not all Gujarati speaking girls share the same accent, Sharma was quick to defend the statement by expressing, “There are Gujarati girls who speak like Sejal. Now, we can’t say that we only want the representation of those Gujaratis that we know. In fact, I also had asked Imtiaz why Sejal speaks like that. He told me that he has interacted with girls who speak like that.”

Also starring Shah Rukh Khan, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ is set to release next week.
