Anurag Kashyap moves out of Mumbai: “It has become too toxic”
Anurag Kashyap has officially relocated from Mumbai and confirmed that he has already made his first rent payment for his new home.
The acclaimed filmmaker had hinted at his plans to move away from the heart of the film industry back in December. In a candid interview with The Hindu, Kashyap revealed, “I’ve left Mumbai. I want to distance myself from the film industry. It has become too toxic. People are fixated on unrealistic goals, constantly striving to create the next Rs 500 or Rs 800 crore blockbuster. The creative spirit has been lost.”
Kashyap has chosen to settle in Bengaluru, a city he holds in high regard. Reflecting on his decision, he remarked, “A city is not just about its buildings; it’s also about the people. And here, they uplift you rather than pull you down.”

The director of Kennedy also shed light on a growing trend within the film industry, noting that many filmmakers have already left Mumbai without making a public announcement. According to Kashyap, the largest exodus has been to the Middle East, particularly Dubai. Others have opted for destinations such as Portugal, London, Germany, and the United States. “These are mainstream filmmakers I’m talking about,” he added, emphasising that the shift is more widespread than most realise.
