A success like ‘Barfi!’ (2012) doesn’t come round often, with it being nominated for an Oscar and all. There’slittle surprise that directorAnurag Basu wants to develop ‘Barfi!’ further. However a sequel is completely off the cards, and Basu is currently researching new ways to develop it.

“A sequel is definitely out. Where I will takeBarfi’sstory when he is already dead?” Hindustan Times reported Basu stating. He did go on to saythat if there is to be a sequel than he would leave it to the producers. However, according to a source close to the filmmaker, Basu is looking into animation and television instead, “He has firmly cut down the suggestion of aBarfi 2. However he is open to renewingBarfi’slife-span in print form and maybe even a television series in animation form. The idea is to take the inspirational aspect of Barfi’s character beyond the parent film.”

Talking about the news of the Oscar nomination Basu was reported sayingthat though he knew ‘Barfi!’ would have a huge impact on audiences, he never expected this much of an impact, “What took me by surprise was the popular mandate given toBarfi. I never expected it to be so popular. I always looked up to Raj Kumar Hirani for making inspirational films that were warmly embraced by the masses. NowBarfiseems to have done the same.”

Basu is currently working on a bio-pic of legendary singer Kishore Kumar and mathematician AnandKumar. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, once all the legalities have been sorted, these projects will soon be well on the road.
