Adil Ray sitcom commissioned for BBC One

Former BBC Asian Network presenter, Adil Ray will get his first stint on BBC One primetime with the launch of his new sitcom, next year.

‘Citizen Khan’ is written by Adil Ray, Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto. The show is about Mr Khan, who is the Asian community leader character created by Adil Ray and previously seen on sketch show ‘Bellamy’s People’ here he stars in his very own family based sitcom.

‘Citizen Khan’ was previewed last week at the BBC’s inaugural Salford Sitcom Showcase which trialed six new sitcoms from both established and up-and-coming writers. It was performed live to studio audiences over a 3-night run.

Cheryl Taylor, Head of Comedy Commissioning, said, “The Salford Sitcom Showcase was designed to encourage more studio sitcoms to be produced and filmed in the North West. We are delighted that within one week of Adil Ray’s phenomenal performance as Citizen Khan the show has been commissioned as a six part series for BBC One. It will prove a wonderful companion piece to our other studio sensations – Mrs Brown’s Boys and Miranda”

Adil Ray left the BBC Asian Network in June last year. He has also worked on Radio 4 and 5 Live. On TV, he has had presenting stints on ‘Inside Out’, ‘Is It Cos I Is Black?’ and ‘Daybreak’
