He’s proved that there doesn’t seem to be anything he can’t do, which is why it comes to no surprise that Ranveer Singh may soon be seen playing the role of Indian rapper Naezy.
Rumoured to be titled ‘Gully Boy’,Indian Express reported Naezy himself confirming, “He (Singh) is doing the film, it is almost confirmed. But still there are few things which are yet to be finalised, writing is underway.”
“Ranveer also listens to hip-hop. He knows what real hip-hop is. We spoke to him and he is also very excited regarding this. He will enjoy this (role) too. I had done a Bollywood track called Birju۪ (2015) on which he lip synced and was in my get up. He was rapping like me. He listens to all our music. He is a very versatile actor. He can be a Bajirao and a rapper too.” the rapper went on to add.
The film will tell the story of the lives of rappers in Mumbai including that of Naezy’s, whose real name isNaved Sheikh. Apparently, Akhtar is well underway with her research having visited some very remote places in the city where there are big hip-hip music communities. Talking about the director Naezy expressed, “She is a very intelligent director. She has thought of making something on this, so it۪s good. The biggest misconception regarding hip-hop will be removed and it will also help the underground scene to reach mainstream.”
Also included in the street music industry is another Mumbai based rapper called Divine, who is also excited about the project. When spoken to, he explained how it’s a chance for the community will be seen differently to it’s stereo type. “It will happen, but depends on what kind of a movie is made. Because rap is related to girls, guns and drugs. But in our space it is different.”
“We talk about everyday struggles, so I think it should be the right director and the right film. If Zoya is making a film, then I think it۪ll be brilliant because her films are quite nice,” he went on to add.
With the film still in it’s early stages there hasn’t been any further confirmation as to who will be joining Singh. However, if Akhtar’s previous projects are anything to go by, audiences can rest assure it will be yet another killer cast.
