ZEE Network goes aggressive on film buy?

ZEE Network seems to be getting aggressive with its film acquisitions. Reports out today suggest the broadcaster has landed itself the biggest hit movie of this year.

Online portal Business Of Cinema has reported that ZEE Network has bagged the rights of many Eros International movie titles including that of ‘Om Shanti Om’ starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. The film, which released during the Diwali period managed to break box office records worldwide.

ZEE Network has already confirmed that it has the telecast rights for this year’s other blockbuster ‘Jab We Met’ starring Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor.

It is not known what the deal between ZEE Network and Eros International will entail of as rival Sony Entertainment Television Asia also bought the rights of many movies from the Eros camp earlier this year.

Confirming the same to Business Of Cinema, ZEE’s Jayantilal Gada says, “Yes we have acquired a few films from Eros, but I cannot share the movie titles with you currently,” Gada said.

A part from the deal with Eros, ZEE has also purchased the rights of recent releases like ‘Dhamaal’, ‘Dhol’, ‘Mera Pehla Pehla Pyar’, ‘Manorama – Six Feet Under’, ‘Raqeeb’ and ‘Yatra’.

ZEE bosses must be pleased with the sudden turnaround in fortunes; flagship channel ZEE TV has been edging ever closer to the numero uno position in India, ZEE Sports has had a good response to the ongoing ICL Twenty20 series and today’s news will see the jigsaw puzzle complete with its film channel ZEE Cinema’s line-up of hit movie premieres.
