Voiceover of Indian character Apu in ‘The Simpsons’ steps down

The voiceover of Indian character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon in the hit show ‘The Simpsons’ will be stepping down after years of controversy.

White actor Hank Azaria has been performing the character for 30 years but has often been accused of reinforcing racial stereotypes. His portrayal of Apu faced increased scrutiny with a documentary in 2017 called ‘The Problem With Apu’, which raised questions about the stereotypical depiction of an Indian immigrant.

Azaria told the website SlashFilm, “All we know there is I won’t be doing the voice anymore, unless there’s some way to transition it or something,”

“We all made the decision together… We all agreed on it. We all feel like it’s the right thing and good about it.”

The character of Apu will be written out.
