Vidya Balan hopes ‘Begum Jaan’ meets good fortune

Vidya Balan 1

Vidya Balan hopes to repeat history and break theassumedʉfirst Friday۪ jinx with her upcomingher release Begum Jaan.۪

Historically speaking, Bollywood films that release in the first weekend of the year have often faced poorBox Office results. However, back on 7th January 2011, No One Killed Jessica۪, starring Balan, proved to be a surprise success andso Balan hopes the same will happen with Begum Jaan۪ when the movie releases on 6th January 2017.

No One Killed Jessica۪ (2011) gainedexposure through the old fashioned method of communication; word of mouth. The movie eventually amassed around Rs 30 crore and proved to be a one-off phenomenon, reports DNA India.

A filmmaker is quoted by the daily as saying, There are reasons other than superstitions or the jinx factor… Typically, a very big film arrives on the Christmas weekend. That traditionally spills over to the next year and hence there are no major screens available for the new films. Not that audiences do not watch films, but then they have their options in place to watch Ranveer Singh۪s ‘Bajirao Mastani’ (2015), Aamir Khan۪s ‘PK’ (2014) and ‘Dhoom:3’ (2013), Salman Khan۪s ‘Dabangg 2’ (2012) and Shah Rukh Khan۪s ‘Don 2’ (2011) in the spillover year.۝

In Balan۪s case with Begum Jaan,۪ the movie would be competing with Aamir Khan۪s Dangal۪ which is due to release on 23rd December, providing an interesting battle between the pair.

Well, that would indeed make things interesting,۝ the filmmaker added. When ‘NOKJ’ had released in 2011, the film had practically arrived solo with no competition in sight since 2010 Christmas releases ‘Tees Maar Khan’ and ‘Toonpur Ka Superhero’ had already ended their run in a jiffy… Guess audiences are in for a treat this time around, since soon after Dangal comes Vidya۪s Begum Jaan, which belongs to an altogether different genre.۝

Time will reveal whether the stars once again work in Balan۪s favour.
