Teacher’s Day 2019: Reel characters that would make good real teachers

5th September, in India, marks a day which celebrates teachers. Teacher’s Day is also a great opportunity to look at how films have played a part in bringing good teachers to the big screen. BizAsiaLive.com looks back at five recent reel characters which we think would make great real-life teachers.

“Jug” Khan from ‘Dear Zindagi’ (2016)
There’s no doubt that Shah Rukh Khan’s previous roles as a teacher or coach have won him accolades. However, in Gauri Shinde directed ‘Dear Zindagi’, he takes on the role of a counsellor. He helps a number of people work through the challenges they’re facing but in this story, he puts Kaira (played by Alia Bhatt) on the so-called “right” path. It would definitely be great to have someone in real-life as calm, collected and focused as Jug to ensure one is always on the right track.

Laila from ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ (2011)
She was the glamorous trainer which almost all of the men in the film seemed to be mesmerised by at first sight, but it’s not just for this reason that we think Laila from ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ would make a great real-life teacher. She may have been a brilliant trainer in scuba-diving, but she also brings out the person in Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) which he seemed to have locked inside. Who wouldn’t want to have this kind of person in your life who helps you become the best you are, by changing your perspective on the things you seem to be adamant about.

Dr Baldev Chaddha from ‘Vicky Donor’ (2012)
Yes, he was perhaps one of the most annoying characters in the film but Dr Chaddha – essayed by Annu Kapoor – was pivotal to the story of ‘Vicky Donor’. The reason he would be good to have as a real-life teacher is that he would be persistent in making you believe in what you’re doing and he’d lead you to life-changing results. There really aren’t too many people in the world who would be able to do that.

Shashi Godbole from ‘English Vinglish’ (2012)
Sridevi’s performance as Shashi was one that many people will hold close to their heart. However, although her character is seen as a mother and wife who is looking to improve on her own self, she would make a good real-life teacher because of the same reason. She would be inspirational because she is working for herself, no matter the odds. It is her determination and dedication to bettering her own self which would be a great thing to have for real.

Nutan “Newton” Kumar from ‘Newton’ (2017)
Played by Rajkummar Rao, “Newton” – as he is known – is at first a reluctant person when he’s given an assignment as a government clerk in a Naxal territory area. However, when he finally comes into his known, he realises the difference he needs to make and he stops at pretty much nothing to ensure that the people in the village are excerising their right to vote. His ability to go above and beyond for people whose access may be limited is something that is admirable and commands respect. It’s these qualities would make a good real-life teacher.

BizAsiaLive.com would like to wish everyone a Happy Teacher’s Day.
