Swara Bhasker urges Mumbai Police to take action against Twitter troll

Swara Bhasker has sought actions against a troll who had abused her on social media, asking the police to intervene. The Mumbai Police has promptly acted by filing an FIR.

The ‘Raanjhaana’ actress did not take well to an inconsiderate troll by the name of Deepak Tiwari, who on Twitter had called her a “call girl” for her support of President Kanhaiya Kumar.

Bhasker responded, saying, “In his own words ‘mad, proud and fortunate nationalist; Hindu’ bringing shame upon his (and my) religion and nation! Also I think this qualifies as harassment or Eve teasing or something @MumbaiPolice”.

The Mumbai Police also responded on Twitter, stating, “We have followed you..Request you to inbox your number. We will look into this on priority”.

Bhasker further spoke on the altercation, stating, “Even though I’m now quite innured to a certain kind of online abuse.. sometimes tweets are just so abusive and vile and coming from a place of pure harassment and misogyny that it’s important to take action. I reported the tweet to Mumbai police twitter handle and they were almost immediate in their response. A staff of the Commissioner’s office called and guided me with procedures and was very helpful and supportive. I’m now in the process of filing an official written complaint with my local police station.”

A TOI report revealed that Mumbai Police Deputy Commissioner Manjunath confirmed that Versova Police Station had registered a case under The Indian Penal Code section 500 for defamation, section 507 for criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication, and under the Information Technology Act section 67 for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form. The Commissioner also assured that the local police would be enlisting the help of cyber police officials to track down the person who responsible for the abusive messages.
