Sunrise TV in trouble over claims in beauty show

Sunrise TV has landed itself into trouble again with Ofcom, this time over claims it made during the telecast of ‘Beauty Simplified’ in July, July and September last year.

Ofcom said that insufficient care had been taken to confine the advice given to areas of beauty and cosmetic appearance. Similarly, in the area of programme-advertising distinction there was precedent for Sunrise TV from Ofcom Findings about two its own shows ‘Your Health’ and ‘Kundli Aur Kismat’. Overall, Sunrise TV broke rules to do with teleshopping and how it promoted goods in programming time.

Sunrise accepted that ‘Beauty Simplified’ adopted a programme format “with additional graphics to provide information to the viewer.” Sunrise TV believed that viewers would readily understand the nature of the show, but it noted that this view may not have been consistent with Ofcom?s expectations. It said that, were the show to return, a further graphic would be added to remove any doubt as to the nature of the show.

However, this is the sseventh breach Finding recorded by Ofcom against Sunrise TV over the past 15 months, all of which have concerned the broadcast of promotional material. Ofcom is therefore putting the broadcaster on notice that any further breach of this nature is likely to result in our consideration of the imposition of statutory sanctions.
