Sunrise Radio marks 35 years of broadcasting milestone

Today marks the 35th anniversary of Sunrise Radio, a pioneering station that became the UK’s first 24-hour Asian radio broadcaster.

Founded by Avtar Lit, Sunrise Radio brought a new wave of representation to British Asian communities, offering a platform for music, culture, and news tailored to their interests.

Reflecting on the station’s journey, Tony Lit, MBE, expressed gratitude for the enduring support from listeners and partners. “Today we celebrate 35 years of unforgettable music, cherished memories, and unwavering community support. From our first broadcast in 1989 to becoming the UK’s first National Asian Commercial Radio Station, and remaining the UK’s Number 1 Asian Commercial Radio Station for 35 years, our journey has been all about our loyal listeners, partners, and the Sunrise Team. Thank you for being part of this incredible story and here’s to many more years together!” he said.

To commemorate the occasion, Sunrise Radio has launched a ‘Special All Request Week’, inviting listeners to request their favourite songs from across the station’s history, spanning from 1989 to 2024. This celebration encourages the community to share personal memories and experiences tied to the music and moments that have made the past 35 years so significant.
