Sunidhi Chauhan has singlehandedly redefined what it means to be a female Bollywood playback singer. With a successful career spanning almost two decades, Chauhan is one of the best-known and most respected playback singers of India. She recently showcased her musical talent by performing at the 2015 Global Citizen Festival along with Coldplay, Beyonc̩, Ed Sheeran and more.

Chauhan told Times of India, “The experience of the global concert was unimaginable. So many people came forward and spoke in one voice to support the various issues that are currently plaguing our world. We had around 65,000 people at Central Park, New York. I was so happy to be associated with such a thing.”

“We must introduce sex education in schools. Though in India we’re conservative, we need to address certain issues in a more practical way. We must educate our children so that they grow up with enlightened minds. Nudity should not be a taboo topic. A more direct approach will help. The global concert actually gave me an incentive to step on it. We cannot just sit back and watch. We need to be the change,” she said.

While Chauhan has never been out of work, the number of songs she sings has surely reduced. Admitting that she been selective, she says, “The only reason I record a lot less these days is because I don’t want to repeat myself. I need to be able to look at myself in the mirror and feel happy. I’ve done every kind of song that Bollywood asked for. Now, I just pass on the songs that I feel can be sung by someone else.”

Chauhan’s star is already shining brightly, but it’s sure to rise even higher in the coming years as her talents continue to develop and she explores new avenues.
