Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Subhash Ghai was referred to as ‘The Showman’ of Hindi cinema. Unfortunately, it has been quite some time since the director has churned out a successful film. Ghai recently spoke about why he is unable to make movies for today’s audience and also accused new-age directors of being “directionless”.

Speaking to ANI, Ghai said, “With change in times, the audience of family drama has shifted to televisions and cinema has entirely gone to the youth. If we talk in today’s perspective, I believe I cannot make a movie like the youth wants to see or the kind of movies that are being made… Young directors are making movie for the youth. They (directors) are so directionless, confused and troubled that they are making movies on the same issues and showing it to the same directionless, confused and troubled audience. And turns out, such movies are doing well at the box office.”

The showman was also responsible for the successful careers of many actors and actresses during his peak. Ghai’s most recent film as director was ‘Kaanchi: The Unbreakable’ (2014), which also launched new faces to the film industry. However, with the film failing, the debutantes also failed to leave a mark.

While the filmmaker has no plans to return to direction as of yet, his classic ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1989) is all set to be remade under the direction of Rohit Shetty, who is a highly successful director of commercial films today.
