Star TV acquires SRK’s ‘Ra.One’ for Rs. 40 crore

Star TV Network has paid an astronomical Rs. 40 crore to acquire Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming sci-fi superhero movie, ‘Ra.One’.

The film, which stars Shah Rukh Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal will be released at cinemas at the end of this year.

The deal is said to be a huge coup for both parties, in particular Star TV Network who has banked on some huge Bollywood movie titles recently. The amount Star TV has paid this time around is being described as one of the largest deals ever. Multi Screen Media (Sony Entertainment Television Asia) paid Rs. 36 crore for ‘3 Idiots’ last year.

These days from the production house’s point of view, pre-selling various rights like satellite and home video helps de-risk the effort by reducing the dependence on revenues from theatres and if this deal is anything to go by, then ‘Ra.One’ has indeed nailed it big time.
