STAR set to axe ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi…’

STAR Plus’ most successful soap ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ is facing the axe, according to reports.

SGL Entertainment Ltd, part of the STAR Group, has issued a notice to the programme producers Balaji Telefilms to terminate its daily ‘Kyunki…’ with effect from 10th November (in India).

IndianTelevision said that Balaji Telefilms is “pursuing all legal remedies available to it” as it feels that the “termination is in breach of contractual obligations owed by the STAR Group to it.”

When IndianTelevision contacted, STAR India CEO Uday Shankar refused to comment on the issue. “The matter is sub judice,” he said.

Today’s news comes as quite a surprise as the show still charts amongst the most watched on the channel. Balaji’s other huge show ‘Kahani Ghar Ghari Kii’ was taken off air earlier this month in India.

‘Kyunki…’ has been on-air for over eight years. The show revolves around the Virani family with actor-politician Smriti Irani playing the lead character of Tulsi.

In August this year STAR and Balaji said they will cancel their regional language joint venture agreement, and the Indian broadcaster will sell its 25.99 per cent stake in Balaji.
