STAR acquires ‘Paa’ & ‘Wanted’ movies

With ZEE Network acquiring ‘Love Aaj Kal’ and ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ from Eros International, STAR TV Network has also announced today its movie acquisitions.

Like ZEE Network, STAR TV too will show its latest batch of movies on an exclusive basis over a five-year period. The films include, ‘Paa’, which is doing steady business at the box office currently. This year’s huge blockbuster, ‘Wanted’ starring Salman Khan and Ayesha Thakia. ‘De Dana Dan’, another one of this year’s big earners starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. The channel has also bought ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Drona’.

Rivals like Colors, ZEE TV, Sony Entertainment Television Asia, NDTV Imagine, among others, have also gone after satellite rights of Bollywood films, but for a non-exclusive arrangement. This means Bollywood hits like ‘Kurbaan’, ‘Kaminey’ or ‘Wake Up Sid’ will be aired on multiple TV channels in 2010 to 2014 and not on just one channel.

With this new deal, STAR is hoping it can challenge Colors and ZEE TV more aggressively and reclaim the top position.

Colors too has built its own library by acquiring exclusive world TV rights for ‘Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani’ and ‘Blue’.
