Spotlight: Asian media ready for Ramadhan

Asian broadcasters have prepared themselves for the Islamic holy month of Ramadhan. BizAsia.co.uk brings you a guide as to what each channel will be covering and at what time…

BBC Asian Network
BBC Asian Network’s special programming for Ramadhan (24th September -24th October) includes three high profile cricketers from Pakistan and ex-pop star Junaid Jamshed.

Pakistani cricket star Mohammed Yousuf (formerly known as Yousuf Youhana), former opening batsman Saeed Anwar and the off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq will appear on the hour-long Ramadan special during the Muslim Holy month.

Ramadan with Junaid Jamshed will broadcast every morning from 04:00 starting 24th September, coinciding with the Sehri time (the last meal before dawn). Junaid will also give his reflections on the day’s fast on ‘Gagan Grewal on the BBC Asian Network’ 19:00 -20:00 and ‘Adil Ray on the BBC Asian Network’ 16:00 -19:00 every day.

Soon after the recently concluded One Day series against England, Yousuf gave the BBC Asian Network a rare half hour long interview, speaking for the first time about his conversion to Islam. The full interview will go out on the daily Hindi/Urdu show ‘Gagan Grewal on the BBC Asian Network’ 19:00 -20:00 on Friday 20th October.

DM Digital
DM Islam TV is hosting a special Ramadan Traweeh prayers beginning on the first day of Ramadhan at 21:00. Up to 300 Namazi’s can attend in the studios to perform their prayers. DM Digital has allocated two floors of their studios to accommodate such prayers.

DM Islam will host Aftari live during the fasting month with special renowned scholars giving lectures on issues of Islam and Ramadhan.

DM Islam is also offering free scrolling message service during the month of Ramadhan inviting all UK mosques to display their prayer times.

Geo UK
Asma-al-Hassana
In this segment of the Sehri Transmission the names of Almighty Allah will be discussed��_indicating the hope, prosperity and mercy that they carry for all those who recite them.

Choti si Neiki
Choti Si Neiki is a social service program, in which various needy people would be provided assistance by the channel.

Khiltay Phool Mehekti Baatein
A special segment for children in which they would be told the do�۪s and don�۪ts about Ramadan, how to act during fasting, importance of fasting, manners during Iftar etc.

Dua-ul-Ambiya
This segment of the Sehri Transmission would highlight a new Dua everyday with its translation.

Irfan-ul-Quran
Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri and Irfan-ul-Quran will give the GEO TV viewers a chance to fill their hearts with the knowledge of God�۪s book. Every Para of the Holy Quran would be discussed in this segment, highlighting its central idea and the word of Allah.

Aalim Online
Aalim Online, a program hosted by the most renowned face on Geo TV, Dr. Aamir Liaquat Hussain The show will focus on Ramadan issues and will be aired live during the Sehri Transmission.

Hamds/Naats

MATV
MATV National and Leicester’s Channel 6 will for the first time air a slew of Ramadhan specials. A renowned scholar, Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra will host the live shows enabling viewers, participants and the community at large with discussion, interaction, prayers and information about Ramadan each day. Ramadan Special programme is being launched from Sunday 24th September 2006 and runs until Monday 23rd October 2006 from 17:00 – 18:00 each day.

Sabras Radio
Sabras Radio in the Midlands began its Ramadhan specials on Monday 11th September. Programmes are being aired between 06:00 – 07:00 daily. For listeners in London, Sabras Radio is also broadcasting a midday special between 12:00 – 13:00.

ZEE TV
Starting from the Monday 25th September, ZEE TV will begin its annual ‘Ramadhan Reflections’ show, which will air between 05:00 – 05:30 daily.
