Sooraj Pancholi receives framed charges for abetting Jiah Khan’s death

It will be almost four years since Jiah Khan was found dead, and today at a sessions court in India, Sooraj Pancholi was given framed charges for abetting Khan’s death.

Reported on DNA India, Judge K D Shirbhate framed charges against Pancholi under the section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code, to which he pleaded not guilty. Pancholi’s lawyer, Prashant Patil said in a statement, “Sooraj pleaded innocence and the examination of witnesses will start from February 14.”

According to the CBI, when investigations were underway, Pancholi didn’t cooperate as much as they would have liked. He refused to take part in polygraph test and this was required in order to understand his alleged role in the death. The CBI said the ‘Hero’ (2015) actor had “hidden facts and fabricated information.”

Khan was found dead at her home on the 3rd June 2013, after hanging herself. Her mother Rabiya Khan said the ‘Nishabd’ (2007) actress had spent two days at Pancholi’s house prior to the incident which happened on the same morning of her return. There the Mumbai police found a three page note detailing the “intimate relationship, physical abuse and mental and physical torture” she had faced by Pancholi, which ultimately led to her taking her own life.

Though the letter was not signed or addressed to him personally, it did incriminate Pancholi. Khan’s mother also went to the Bombay High Court, as she believed her daughter had been murdered. With the backing from the court, the CBI set out to delve deeper.
