Sony TV to join new Star-ZEE distribution group?

Sony Entertainment Television Asia’s parent company Multi Screen Media is also said to be in talks with the newly formed Star-ZEE distribution company, Media Pro Enterprise India Pvt Ltd, for a possie merger.

Multi Screen Media’s Obe Alliance bouquet distributes 19 channels like Sony TV, MAX, PIX, SAB TV, Discovery and Aaj Tak in India. However, Business Standard has reported that a top source in One Alliance confirmed they were looking to join the new company. He did not give details. Rohit Gupta, president, MSM India, refused to comment.

If this deal goes through then the new company will distribute a whopping 109, giving it the power to negotiate with pan-India multi-system operators (MSOs), who run cable networks, and independent cable players. MSOs have been increasing carriage charges every year, hitting broadcasters. Broadcasters pay MSOs to get space on premium bands. This ensures more viewers.

The only other major player in the distribution field left will be Sun-18, which carries channels like Sun Tamil, Colors, plus a few others.

Keep it here for further developments.
