Sony Entertainment Television Asia has become one of the first Asian broadcasters in the UK to switch to a widescreen format.

BizAsiaLive.com can exclusively reveal that the popular channel has moved away from broadcasting in the standard 4:3 letterbox format, to 16:9 format. In simple words, the channel’s picture quality will no longer seem stretched.

Sony Pictures Networks Asia confirmed to BizAsiaLive.com that the transition took place over the past couple of days. It also said that the channel is available in widescreen in all territories around the world. Sony TV sister channels, Sony MAX and SAB TV are also expected to follow but the broadcaster is yet to confirm.

Sony TV is the first non-HD Asian channel to be available in widescreen. Star Plus and &TV are the only other channels in the UK to be available in widescreen as the pictures are simulcast from HD to their SD equivalents.
