Sony MAX to become first non-GEC HD channel to launch in UK

Sony Pictures Networks’ will become the first broadcaster to launch a non-general entertainment HD Hindi channel in the UK.

As it was revealed first on BizAsiaLive.com a few weeks ago, Sony Pictures Networks will be launching Sony Entertainment Television HD and Sony MAX HD on Tuesday 1st August in the UK. Currently, Star Plus, Colors and &TV are the only Asian channels to provide a HD equivalent in the UK. Sony TV and Sony MAX will join the list next month, with only ZEE TV left out of the big Indian TV networks to not have a HD channel.

What gives Sony Pictures Networks the edge over its rivals is that it will become the first to run two HD channels in the UK, as well as broadcasting a 24-hour Bollywood movie channel in HD. Sony MAX is the exclusive home to some of the biggest movies including the entire library of Yash Raj Films, plus recently released spectaculars like ‘Baaahubali: The Conclusion’, ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’, ‘Sultan’, ‘Befikre’, ‘Dilwale’ and great classics such as ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’, ‘Kabhi Kabhie’, ‘Silsila’ and ‘Kaala Patthar’.

Other broadcasters have been mulling over the idea of launching more HD channels but it remains to be seen if they will be able to justify the spiraling costs that come with launching such services in the UK market.

Sony TV HD and Sony MAX HD will launch exclusively on Sky on Tuesday 1st August.
