Sky snaps up UK broadcast & digital rights for Indian Premier League

Sky has confirmed that it has signed a new multi-year deal in the UK for broadcast and digital rights of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The new deal consists of Sky Sports broadcasting 60 live IPL matches each year in the UK and Ireland. The matches will air on Sky Sports, as well as its digital app live.

Star TV, which acquired the worldwide broadcast and digital rights for the tournament last year, was initially expected to retain the digital rights to launch its Hotstar service in the UK but it now seems the idea has been deferred. Also in a first for IPL this year, Star TV will be sharing some matches with state broadcaster, Doordarshan. This will be the first time that IPL will air on free-to-air television.

The new season of IPL, kicks off in 7th April 2018.
