Shreya Ghoshal celebrates a decade in Bollywood

12th July 2002; the day Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Devdas’ released. The film was indeed a special one but will never be quite as special as it would have been for Shreya Ghoshal. Ten years to the day, Ghoshal has many an award to her name and a full decade of unforgettable songs which the audiences will remember forever. From Bairi Piya in ‘Devdas’ to Chalao Na Naino Se from last week’s release, ‘Bol Bachchan’ (2012), Ghoshal’s career of ten years should be celebrated and BizAsia are seeking to do just that as we take a look at the talented singer’s��most notable Hindi film songs��year by year.

2002

Ghoshal’s debut couldn’t have been more perfect for a playback singer. She sang five out of ten songs for ‘Devdas’ which included singing for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Her singing talent was there for all to see (or hear) what with the mischievous Bairi Piya and the ever popular Dola Re Dola. Her versatility was at the forefront and it was clear that hers was a voice that had made her mark. Her journey from then on in is just as rewarding and colourful.

2003

Within her first year, Ghoshal was given two songs in ‘Jism’ which also marked the debut of Bollywood hunk John Abraham. Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai can be seen as one of Ghoshal’s best songs to date. Towards the end of the year Ghoshal also gave the audiences a very beautiful song in Chan Chan from ‘Munnabhai MBBS’.

2004

In 2004, Ghoshal sang for Bachchan again in ‘Khakee’ in the songs Wada Raha and Dil Dooba. These two songs are almost at opposite ends of a spectrum with one being a dance number and the other a melodious love song. In the same year, Ghoshal lent her vocals to the title song of ‘Main Hoon Na’ in the sensual Tumhe Jo Maine Dekha and also in the title track.

2005

Although Ghoshal lent her voice to many film songs in 2005, none were quite as popular as ‘Parineeta’ which saw the introduction of Vidya Balan. She sang a total of four songs in the movie but the one that stands out is Piyu Bole. The other song worth a mention for this year was the title track of ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ which was a duet with the music director, Himesh Reshammiya. The same year also saw her sing another that��turned out as��a career-best; Agar Tum Mil Jao from ‘Zeher’.

2006

‘Krrish’ saw Ghoshal lend her voice for the first time to Priyanka Chopra with Pyar Ki Ek Kahani and Koi Tumsa Nahin. She also sang the extremely heartfelt and soulful O Saathi Re in ‘Omkara’.

2007

2007 saw many a song sung by Ghoshal. The soundtracks that particularly stand out are ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Aaja Nachle’. The two songs which particularly made an impression were Yeh Ishq Hai (‘Jab We Met’) and Ishq Hua (‘Aaja Nachle’).

2008

2008 was the year that Ghoshal got much recognition for ‘Singh Is Kinng’ in the song Teri Ore which is a firm favourite for many even today. Her rendition of the slow Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai from ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ is also enough to give goose bumps time and time again.

2009

Shukran Allah from ‘Kurbaan’ and Zoobi Doobi from ‘3 Idiots’ got Ghoshal much appreciation in 2009. She sang for many films but no songs were quite as popular as these two.

2010

This was the year that saw Ghoshal many number which became hugely popular. The ones that stand out in particular are Noor-e-Khuda (‘My Name Is Khan’), Tere Liye (‘Prince’), Bahara (‘I Hate Luv Storys’), Tere Mast Mast Do Nain and Chori Kiya Re Jiya (‘Dabangg’).

2011

Last year, Ghoshal had a big hit in Saathiya from ‘Singham’ as well as Teri Meri with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in ‘Bodyguard’. Aside from these, she also received much acclaim for Ooh La La in ‘The Dirty Picture’ which revived the 80s feel.

2012

This year, Ghoshal has already had many great tracks including Chikni Chameli in ‘Agneepath’ and Piya O Re Piya from ‘Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya’ which coupled her with Atif Aslam once again since ‘Prince’.
