Short film ‘Shut Up’ inspired by Gurmehar Kaur

When Gurmehar Kaur became a part of a campaign against Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), little did she know her small action of speaking out, would lead to her getting “trolled” by some big names. However  after gaining support from the likes of Delhi University and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, the 20 year old has been the inspiration of a short film, titled ‘Shut Up’.

As Mid-Day reports, Kaur’s father Captain Mandeep Singh was killed during the Jammu-Kashmir attacks in 1999. Taking to social media after the protest at Delhi’s Ramjas College against ABVP, Kaur expressed, “Pakistan didn’t kill my father, war did.” With her statement becoming controversial, filmmaker Guneet Monga, has produced a film based on freedom of speech.

“It’s time we get out there and speak up. Our voices need to be heard, and as filmmakers, it’s our responsibility to make relevant cinema,” the producer was reported stating. Releasing online, ‘Shut Up’ is directed by Ashutosh Pathak and stars Arjun Radhakrishnan and Anuritta Jha.
