Sharmila Tagore, Freida Pinto among new Oscar Academy members

Sharmila Tagore

Following the huge diversity row over the recent Oscars, it seems that organisers are keen on revamping the way things are perceived. Part of this change has apparently included adding prominent names of Indian origin to their academy. BizAsia has learnt that Sharmila Tagore and Freida Pinto as well as Asif Kapadia and Deepa Mehta have been made members.

They were invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to be members. Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Academy President, said, according to Deccan Chronicle, This class continues our long-term commitment to welcoming extraordinary talent reflective of those working in film today. We encourage the larger creative community to open its doors wider, and create opportunities for anyone interested in working in this incredible and storied industry۝.

Kapadia won an Oscar for his documentary on Amy Winehouse in the most recent ceremony.
