If one thinks Bollywood films, no memory can be complete without jumping up and down and trying to remember the steps that were in that one song. All Bollywood songs are not only remembered for their music and lyrics but also predominately because of the steps associated with them. The people responsible for creating these iconic steps are choreographers, and most likely the song that your grooving to has been choreographed by the talented Shiamak Davar.
Davar has trained one and all, his academy and branches, present in thirty cities in six countries, is one of the biggest Bollywood dance academies. Bollywood songs have him to thank for Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and Sushant Singh Rajput’s killer moves. He has trained them all. Kapoor, Dhawan, and Rajput spoke to the TOI about their dance guru.
Kapoor is known to be one of the best dancers in Bollywood, and he’s grateful to Davar for it. “Shiamak has been a friend to me. I learnt the fundamentals in professional conduct and dance from him. His contribution to my journey is huge and I’ll always be grateful to him.”
Davar changed Dhawan’s life. “Learning at Shiamak’s dance academy and training with his instructors really changed my life. In every student, they instill discipline, passion, and a belief that they can achieve anything they put their minds to.”
We wouldn’t have Rajput without Davar. “Shiamak is one of the biggest reasons why I am an actor today. He asked me to try theatre and there was no looking back. His institute is one of the best we have.”
Davar is proud of all his students, and feels that there is much more hidden talent that needs to be nurtured. Davar stated, “Dance education has always been at the forefront for me. There is so much talent hidden across the country, I want to give these people a platform to perform and experience the joy of dancing. Beside metros like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore, there is a lot of raw talent that needs to be tapped and nurtured in towns like Kanpur, Aurangabad, Vizag, etc. All my students are the same for me. Whether it was Shahid, Varun, or Sushant, they had to work hard and commit themselves to the performing arts. I feel proud of them for working their way up and achieving everything that they have. They still love coming back to class because this is where they feel at home.”
Davar is not only a popular Bollywood film choreographer, but he also choreographs for some of the most popular award shows, including the very popular IIFA Awards and has also choreographed the Melbourne 2006 and Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games.
