Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Farzi’: Review round-up
‘Farzi’ currently streaming on Prime Video is an engaging crime-thriller series featuring Shahid Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Kay Kay Menon, Rashii Khanna, Bhuvan Arora, Zakir Hussain, Chittranjan Giri, Jaswant Singh Dalal, Amol Palekar and Kubbra Sait.
The story revolves around Sunny (Shahid Kapoor), a small-time artist, who enters the dark world of counterfeit currency with his childhood friend, Firoz (Bhuvan Arora). As he gets in deeper into the business, his world changes, throwing him into the vortex of action between a dangerous counterfeiter don and a no-nonsense cop Michael.

But and this is the trouble with ‘Farzi’, nothing ever feels urgent or fresh enough. There is a lot of explanatory chatter, a lot of declamation, and a lot of first-tell-then-show: what could have been wrapped up in four or five episodes is stretched over into eight.”

“Raj and DK, with writers Sita R. Menon and Suman Kumar, are a masterclass in writing female characters into thrillers without resorting to lip-service or tokenism. Every character in Farzi is granted the same respect, except maybe the lead gets greater focus, and every actor steals the show. Farzi is packed with twists and turns but as is the danger of the genre, some of them are predictable. However, the show relies on its strong writing (sometimes amateurish cussing aside) to keep a viewer hooked.”

The only one who is allowed to be a tad flashy is Kay Kay Menon, who comes up with an act that is balanced and impactful. Shahid Kapoor digs his teeth deep into the meaty central role and delivers a performance that is remarkable for its sustained restraint. Besides Amol Palekar, who is splendid as an embodiment of a moral compass that the protagonist must contend with as he breaks the law, Raashii Khanna, Chittaranjan Giri and Bhuvan Arora etch out characters that we would certainly love to see more of.”
