Shah Rukh Khan defends poor reviews of ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’

Shah Rukh Khan and Imtiaz Ali have said the magic of ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ (2017) is yet to reach its audiences. The duo were responded to the poor reviews the film has received since its release on Friday.

The movie has received criticisms from reviewers and movie-goers that there is no intellect required when watching the film, nor is there anything new that the film offers. The actor and director pair spoke out at recent film promotions with Ali saying “I am sure that a lot of people do not think that Jab Harry Met Sejal is an intellectual masterpiece, but I did not intend it to be one,” as reported by Hindustan Times.

The director who is known for his thoughtful work with ‘Jab We Met’ (2007), ‘Rockstar’ (2011) and ‘Highway’ (2014) has been classified as thinking-man’s director.  However Ali rallied against this typecast adding “Some said you really need to be intelligent to understand an Imtiaz Ali film. For me that was a blow. I feel that I have never been part of any intelligent club. I wanted to make a very simple film with all my heart”.

Khan also went onto support his director stating each film a director makes creates its own magic and not to compare to previous films. “So every writer or director does not want to go back to the same magic because he/she does not know how it was created. Some critics have talked about the magic being missing. I think he would not like to recreate that magic that he has done in the past. This one has a new magic. It’s a new trick. Maybe just the newness of it is going to take some time for people to understand the magic of the film”.  Khan also added that it had been magical working with Ali for the film.

It remains to be seen whether the magic can continue but for the moment the film has not been as greatly received as expected.
