Salman Khan has told a Mumbai court that he was not drinking or driving in the 2002 hit and run case.

Khan recorded his statement on the sequence of events pertaining to the case, which left one dead and four injured after his rashly driven vehicle crashed into them.

In his account, Khan told the Mumbai Sessions Court today that it was his driver Ashok who was driving on the night of the fateful accident. The 49-year-old repeatedly denied that he was drinking alcohol, instead he was on water that night. He added that he did not run away after the accident.

“Salman Khan has told the court that his driver was driving the car and he had not consumed alcohol,” the public prosecutor told reporters.

Khan’s account contradicts what the police have given in its statement.

The actor is being tried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
