Salaam BCR in breach with Ofcom over “hate speech” on-air
The now defunct radio station, Salaam BCR, has been found guilty of broadcasting “hate speech,” as reported by Ofcom. The Bury-based station, previously licensed to Markaz-Al-Huda Limited, handed back its community radio licence on 1st October 2024.
This action follows a complaint regarding a programme aired on 17th October 2023. The complaint alleged that the broadcast contained incitement to violence, specifically against the Jewish community, and called for “Jihad” against “the enemies of Islam.” Ofcom’s investigation found that the programme, which was also repeated later that day, breached broadcasting rules by inciting hatred and promoting violence.

According to Ofcom’s assessment, the comments in the broadcast had the potential to cause significant offence to listeners. The lack of contextual information or attempts to mitigate the offensive nature of the content heightened its severity. Given the serious nature of these breaches, the case is being referred to a sanctions panel, where further statutory action may be taken.
