Sajid Javid appointed new Health Secretary after Matt Hancock resignation

Sajid Javid has been named the new Health Secretary after the resignation of Matt Hancock.

Downing Street confirmed that the 51-year-old, Bromsgrove MP, will takeover from Hancock after landing into controversy for breaking social distancing rules with an aide.

In his letter of resignation, Mr Hancock said: “The last thing I would want is for my private life to distract attention from the single-minded focus that is leading us out of this crisis.

“I want to reiterate my apology for breaking the guidance, and apologise to my family and loved ones for putting them through this. I also need (to) be with my children at this time.”

Previously, Javid was the Home Secretary between 2018 and 2019. He was then appointed Chancellor until February 2019 when he was replaced by Rishi Sunak.
