Sabras & MATV welcome Big B to Leicester

Leicester’s Sabras Radio and MATV are teaming up to welcome the Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan to the city later this month.

The superstar will receive an honorary degree from De Montfort University in Leicester on Wednesday 19th July. The university is awarding the Honorary Doctor of Arts to Bachchan in recognition of his long and distinguished career in films.

Amitabh Bachchan is a well-known figure in the creative industries and his energy and professionalism will be an inspiration to our graduates and students across the board, and especially to those wishing to pursue careers in this sector,۝ a University spokesman is quoted as saying.

After receiving the degree at the graduation ceremony of the De Montfort University, Bachchan will address thousands of fans at the Walkers Stadium.

At the Walkers Stadium, the venue of premiership football matches and the home of Leicester’s football team, Bachchan will round off an under-14 football tournament watched by thousands of fans.

Keith Vaz, Leicester East MP, told the media: “I am delighted that De Montfort University will be the first in the UK to award an honorary degree on Amitabh Bachchan. I’m also thrilled that Mr Bachchan will be coming to meet the community at this very special event. I hope people will respond positively.”

Leicester is known for its large population of Indian origin residents. The town also has several cinema halls exclusively showing Indian films.

Local media such as Sabras Radio and MATV will be running special contests to coincide with the arrival of the actor. Sabras Radio has announced it will be running a special competition in which five lucky listeners will be able to put questions directly to Bachchan.

Sabras Radio, MATV and Sony Entertainment Television Asia will also be airing highlights of the event.

There are also rumours suggesting Nitin Chandra Ganatra (Bride & Prejudice fame) has been roped in to host the event.
