Royal Wedding dominates Indian TV channels

A global audience of two billion witnessed the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday, with Indian TV channels not being left behind on the historic day.

Whilst Asian TV channels in the UK snubbed the Royal Wedding coverage, it was channels from Asia such as Aaj Tak, NDTV 24×7, ARY News, Geo News and Star News relaying feeds from London back home and also on their UK feeds.

According to Business Standard, some channels in India had signed up major brands to air during Royal Wedding coverage. The Discovery Network’s travel and lifestyle channel TLC had signed up with Tanishq, Volkswagen, Nestle, Ponds, Make My Trip, Pepsi, Yardley as sponsors for the high profile event to air ads starting 24th April, which marked the beginning of the ‘Royal Wedding Week’.

Surprisingly UK Asian TV channels decided to opt out of the Royal Wedding coverage and instead sticking to normal programming. Other than regular news bulletins, there was hardly a whisper of the Royal Wedding. Only ZEE Cinema decided to run a series of special “wedding” themed movies surrounding the national celebrations.
