Riz Ahmed wins Oscar for ‘The Long Goodbye’; becomes first Muslim to win

Riz Ahmed has become the first Muslim to win an Oscar in the live-action category. He led the British success at the ceremony this year, with his gong for short film ‘The Long Goodbye’.

“In such divided times, we believe that the role of story is to remind us there is no ‘us’ and ‘them’. There’s just ‘us’. This is for everyone who feels like they don’t belong. Anyone who feels like they’re stuck in no man’s land. You’re not alone. We’ll meet you there. That’s where the future is. Peace”, said the British actor and musician, during his acceptance speech.

Last year, Ahmed got an Oscar nomination for ‘Sound of Metal’ which he lost out to to Anthony Hopkins.

BizAsia wishes the actor many congratulations on this extraordinary win.
