Rishi Sunak set to block BBC licence fee increase

The UK government is expected to block the planned £15 BBC licence fee increase.

The culture secretary, Lucy Frazer said the £15 increase would “absolutely” be too much. She was concerned a “significant rise” in the fee would add to cost of living pressures.

Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak was cited in reports saying, “I think going forward, look the BBC – final decisions haven’t been made obviously – but the BBC should be realistic about what it can expect people to pay at a time like this. That, I think is the right approach.”

Currently, the fee stands at £159 and has been frozen over the last two years. It is due to rise in line with inflation in April 2024.
