Remembering Bollywood’s favourite Ma Reema Lagoo

The showbiz world this morning woke up to the incredibly sad news that actress Reema Lagoo passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest at the age of 59. Lagoo was a well- known name in the industry both on the big screen and on the silver screen and was best loved playing the role of a mother. She played mother to some of the biggest actors in Bollywood including Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. BizAsiaLive.com takes a look back at some of Lagoo’s most popular roles in films playing everyone’s favourite Ma.

‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (1989)
‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ is known as Salman Khan’s breakthrough film and Lagoo played Salman’s mother Kaushalya Choudhary. In the film, Lagoo let Khan’s character go in search of his true love and she set the bar high for future actresses playing mothers as a result.

‘Aashiqui’ (1990)
‘Aashiqui’ was a pivotal movie of its time with Rahul Roy and Anu Aggarwal as the lead characters. Lagoo played Rahul’s mother who was trying to support her son as he went through the first throes of romance.

‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!’ (1994)
Lagoo played Rima and though she was not Salman’s mother this time, she was mum to Nisha (Madhuri Dixit) and her sister. In the film, Rima is married to Anupam Kher who is a jovial and likes to tease his wife about the past love story. Lagoo’s character was very warm on screen as a mother and she depicted the loss of daughter as she got married very sensitively.

‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998)
Lagoo played the mother in law that everyone wished they had and every mother that daughters wished they had. In the film, Lagoo played Reema, mother to Anjali (Kajol). Anjali is torn between leaving behind her past love (Shah Rukh Khan) to pursue her new love Prem (Salman Khan). There is a great between Reema and Anjali where Reema questions her daughter if she is happy and her daughter replies that she is comprising with her feelings to be find happiness.

‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United’ (1999)
Lagoo played Mamta, mother to three sons, Vivek, Prem and Vinod and daughter Sangeeta. Salman Khan’s character Prem is her favourite son who is a mother’s boy and won’t do anything without her say so. Mamta’s character was torn between favouring her actual sons or her stepsons Vivek when it comes to money and property. Lagoo played her character of a mother’s love under conflict incredibly well.

‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ (2003)
Lagoo’s role in ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ was one of her most conflicted roles yet. She played mother to Aman (Shah Rukh Khan) who is dying due to his failing heart. Aman loves Naina (Priety Zinta) but can’t be with her so he decides to ensure she has someone to love her before he dies. Lagoo played her role to perfection, supporting her son’s wishes and staying steadfast at her son’s sick bed till the very end.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Reema Lagoo at this difficult time.
